Seven Cameroonian soldiers, suspected of summarily executing two women and their two children in northern Cameroon, will be tried in a military court in Yaoundé for “assassination,” announced Monday, June 24, by the Cameroonian Ministry of Defense.

In July 2018, a very violent three-minute video of Cameroonian soldiers shooting two women and their very young children was broadcasted on the Internet. The broadcast of this video provoked a wave of indignation.

According to the communication officer of the Cameroonian Ministry of Defense, the date of the trial has not yet been set. The charges are “co-murder, violation of instructions, complicity of the said facts”. “Cameroon does not deal with the differences in behavior regarding the law of war, humanitarian law, and the protection of people and their property,” he said.

The Cameroonian army accused

Soon, the Bellingcat group and Amnesty International blamed the Cameroonian army, while BBC found the place and date of the executions. Initially, Yaoundé refuted any involvement of Cameroonian soldiers, calling the video “fake news” and “horrible special effects“.

But the government subsequently retracted, announcing, in August 2018, the arrest of seven soldiers in an investigation opened after the broadcast of this video. It is these soldiers who will be tried in the military court.

The Cameroonian army is regularly denounced by human rights organizations for abuse on the various fronts in which it is engaged.
