The problem of non legalized marriages is a common one in Burundi as explained by the spokesman to the minister of Interior affaires, Terence Maharaja.
Most of the illegal marriages are carried out on school girls who get pregnant in the course of their schooling. This issue is also seen in polygamous marriages where the wives who often come after the first woman are not registered.
The president of Burundi took this decision in his speech on the 1st of may 2017, where he said that all unions between men and women should be legalized before the 31stof December 2017.
This to protect mostly women and children who often face problems in marital homes
The authorities of Burundi however evoked a fine of 50.000 Burundian francs (22euros) on those who default from this rule.
Most people however in this country do not legalize their marriages due to the inability to meet up with financial obligations placed by parents
